Grounding spoken interaction with real-time gaze in dynamic virtual environments

چکیده

Gaze is an important cue in visually situated dialog, grounding referring expressions to objects in the environment. We present a new technique which demonstrates that monitoring real-time listener gaze – and giving appropriate feedback – enhances reference resolution by the listener: In a 3D virtual environment, users followed directional instructions, including pressing a number of buttons that were identified using referring expression generated by the system (see GIVE; Koller et al., 2010). Gaze to the intended referent following a referring expression was taken as evidence of successful understanding and elicited positive feedback; by contrast, gaze to other objects triggered early negative feedback. We compared this eye movement-based feedback strategy with two baseline systems, revealing that the eye-movement based feedback leads to significantly more successful button presses than the other two strategies. Our findings suggest that listener gaze immediately following a referring expression reliably indicates how a listener resolved the expression.

Transformed Social Interaction , Augmented Gaze , and Social Infl uence in Immersive Virtual Environments

Immersive collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) are simulations in which geographically separated individuals interact in a shared, three-dimensional, digital space using immersive virtual environment technology. Unlike videoconference technology, which transmits direct video streams, immersive CVEs accurately track movements of interactants and render them nearly simultaneously (i.e., in r...

Combined Head - Eye Tracking for Immersive Virtual Reality

Real-time gaze tracking is a promising interaction technique for virtual environments. Immersive projection-based virtual reality systems such as the CAVE allow users a wide range of natural movements. Unfortunately, most head and eye movement measurement techniques are of limited use during free head and body motion. An improved head-eye tracking system is proposed and developed for use in imm...

Attentive Presentation Agents

The paper describes an infotainment application where lifelike characters present two MP3 players in a virtual showroom. The key feature of the system is that the presenter agents analyze the user’s gaze-behavior in real-time and may thus adapt the presentation flow accordingly. In particular, a user’s (non-)interest in interface objects and also preference in decision situations is estimated a...

Exploring Spoken Dialog Interaction in Human-Robot Teams

We describe TeamTalk: A human-robot interface capable of interpreting spoken dialog interactions between humans and robots in consistent real-world and virtual-world scenarios. The system is used in real environments by humanrobot teams to perform tasks associated with treasure hunting. In order to conduct research exploring spoken human-robot interaction, we have developed a virtual platform u...
